Our Mission

The goal of our program is to attract and retain diverse talent through targeted recruitment and the elimination of barriers for those traditionally underrepresented in biomanufacturing. We aim to create a more inclusive and diverse talent pool, creating a workforce that is not only well-equipped with the necessary skills but that also represents a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives, fosters innovation, and drives industry growth.

Our Approach

To meet industry and community needs, we partner with employers, community organizations, workforce boards, and educational institutions. This collaboration creates a support system that empowers individuals to thrive in desirable roles while providing employers with diverse talent. We prioritize removing barriers, offering regular support, and enhancing retention through continuous engagement and development opportunities.

The Apprenticeship Model

The U.S. Department of Labor's research has found that Registered Apprenticeship programs offer numerous benefits, including:

  • Attract high-quality applicants
  • Enhance employee relations
  • Provide national and state recognition
  • Enhance  workforce versatility
  • Decrease employer turnover

Let us do the Heavy Lifting

Employers in the Access Bio Apprenticeship Program can enjoy the benefits of a registered apprenticeship without the administrative burden. Oregon Bio, as program administrator, handles outreach, recruitment, training plans, record-keeping, compliance, quality assurance, and support services for apprentices. This allows employers to focus on their core business while benefiting from a skilled and inclusive workforce.

Frequently Asked Questions
A Registered Apprenticeship Program offers nationally recognized credentials that ensure training meets industry standards, with oversight by the State of Oregon adding credibility and potential access to funding. Additionally, a group apprenticeship model allows companies to tap into a shared pool of resources and expertise, reducing the burden of managing the program alone while benefiting from a collaborative approach to workforce development.
The process begins with employers identifying their workforce needs and committing to hiring. Oregon Bio then recruits high school graduates and adults seeking a new career. Candidates are interviewed and selected for the program based on their fit. Once selected, apprentices attend a two-week readiness training to familiarize them with biomanufacturing. After the training, apprentices transition to a year of on-the-job training (OJT), where they continue their education while gaining hands-on experience. Throughout this time, a mentoring program supports and guides the apprentices.
By participating in the Access Bio Apprenticeship Program, employers gain access to a pipeline of motivated and well-prepared candidates who have undergone specialized training in biomanufacturing. The program allows employers to shape their future workforce, reduce recruitment costs, and increase employee retention through a structured mentorship and training process. Additionally, employers can enhance their workforce diversity and tap into new talent pools.

Employers in the Access Bio Apprenticeship Program pay apprentices' wages, starting at a training wage with progressive increases, offer benefits and paid time off, ensure work is supervised by trained workers, register with the state as a training agent, adhere to program standards, and complete quarterly online progress reviews.

Oregon Bio manages governmental filings, funds readiness training, tracks apprentices' progress, and provides ongoing support through a dedicated success manager. They also coordinate retention activities, including inclusion training, regional meet-ups, and additional support for apprentices and mentors to ensure a successful apprenticeship experience.
