BIPOC in Bioscience

Purpose

The BIPOC in Bioscience Committee is dedicated to fostering workforce diversity in Oregon's bioscience community by increasing representation of people from communities of color at all professional levels, including leadership. The committee aims to cultivate environments that support retention by ensuring individuals feel a sense of belonging, are heard, and are valued within the bioscience industry.

Key goals include:

  • Promoting equity and inclusion through awareness, programs, and professional development opportunities
  • Leading the industry in building a culture of understanding, acceptance, and celebration of differences

Together, we aim to create a stronger, more inclusive bioscience community.

Current Objectives
  • Host regional networking events to raise awareness and encourage participation in the committee.
    • BIPOC in Bioscience, modeled after Partners in Diversity’s Say Hey! events, is designed to empower participants through connection, collaboration, and celebration. These events bring together Black, Indigenous, and all People of Color in the bioscience industry to build meaningful networks and foster community support. Attendees have the opportunity to:
      • Advance their careers
      • Find mentors
      • Expand their professional networks
      • Share their stories, exchange ideas, and draw inspiration from the collective strength of the BIPOC community
  • Generate ideas to strengthen retention efforts and diversity within bioscience organizations.
  • Explore opportunities to invite guest scientists to speak at BIPOC-focused STEM community-based organizations.

The committee welcomes new ideas and encourages members to shape its agenda and initiatives. Commitment involves attending committee meetings and contributing to programs that align with personal interests and expertise.
